History

First Baptist Church was started January 11, 1922.  In April of 1924 the church voted to build their first building located at 450 E. Springfield Rd.  The building was dedicated on September 15, 1925.  In 1928 due to hardship the church was faced with selling their building because they could not afford the interest.  However, two men following the example of Matt 6:21, “where your treasure is there your heart will be also,” paid off the bills and thereby saved the building.

The church continued to grow and in 1952 dedicated a new Educational wing and in 10 years they were in need of yet a bigger sanctuary as their church enrollment reached an all-time high of over 500.  In 1962 the church dedicated the new Sanctuary/Educational wing which provided much needed space.

With the new addition came more growth and in the late Seventies the church voted once again to build a new sanctuary.  The basement was completed in 1980 and due to set backs in the church, the Sanctuary sat unfinished for almost 15 years.  In the late Eighties the church decided to launch a campaign to finish the new Sanctuary called “Vision 2000,” and in 1994 complete what is now the current Sanctuary.

The church has had 19 pastors since its beginning, and has seen God do many marvelous things in the lives of so many people and in the town of St. Clair.

We invite you to come and be a part of our churches history.
